Freedom In Christ
Unsaved man lives in a box while self-determining himself to be free. He is not free, since all of his choices lead to death. Man gets to choose, but he does not get to choose what the choices are, and he does not get to choose the consequences of the choices. This is because man did not create the heavens, the earth, and himself. In fact, man has never created anything. Man simply rearranges what is already here while living in the delusion that this degree of freedom means that he is totally free and thus autonomous.
God did create the heavens, the earth, and man. God is the only self-determined thing in existence. God self-determined that the only freedom available to man is through God, and that the only pathway to God is through His Son, Jesus Christ. After salvation through Jesus Christ, we are free unto the life of God and with God. We are so free that God allows us a certain freedom not to walk in that freedom for which Christ set us free.
However, the Christian cannot have it both ways. He cannot continue to live in self and access the abundant life that Christ came to give. Our options are determined by God. We can live in self while engaging in joyless warfare against the purposes of Jesus while bringing glory to ourselves, or we can engage in joyful warfare on behalf of Jesus to bring Him maximal glory and pleasure. Sorry, but these are the only options given by the only truly self-determined Being in all of existence, and after all, it is His universe.
